The 1860 census would have been the first that he would have appeared in.
In 1870 he would have been around 20 years old. I know from a marriage license that he married in 1873 and was living in Carroll County, Georgia at that time.
I located him in the 1880 census, living in Carroll.
The 1890 census does not exist because of a fire in the 20th century.
I located Hiram in the 1900 census, living in Cullman, Alabama.
I cannot find him in the 1910 census, which would have been the last one before his death in 1915.
I've been trying for some time now to locate Hiram Eady in the 1860 census. He would have been around 10 years old. I figure the 1860 census would solve exactly who his parents were!
This blog entry is so that I can keep track of all my research. It becomes really confusing.
I'm sort of working backward with the belief that the family trees listing Henry H. Eady and Nancy Caldwell being Hiram's parents are correct.
Here is a fact I discovered:
Henry & Nancy were married in 1850 in Fayette County, Georgia. This information was obtained from their marriage license.
I believe they were married in February and Hiram was born in November the same year. I don't believe births were recorded in a special way like they are today so I'm not expecting to find a certificate. The 1860 census should show Hiram listed in the household.
Clues
- According to a family tree listed here: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/i/l/Odell-Williams-GA/BOOK-0001/0003-0006.html Henry Eady married Elizabeth Gay in 1807 in Wilkerson County, Georgia. Henry & Elizabeth would be the parents of Henry H. Eady. 12/2/14 NOTE: there is no 'Wilkerson' county in Georgia, only Wilkinson.
- Downloaded a map of the counties in Georgia. I noticed that Fayette County is close to Carroll. I'm going to search surrounding counties to see if I can find the Eady's in the census.
- 12/2/14: Just occurred to me that Eady may be misspelled as 'Edy.' Will double check all of the census records for this spelling.
Research Notes
- 12/2/14 continued searching through Fayette County's 1860 census. There are a total of 127 handwritten pages to look through. The handwriting is atrocious and the ink seems to have faded considerably with time. The census is located here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jmg12/Census/1860%20Fayette%20GA/
- 12/2/14 Checking surrounding counties for census records. Coweta County doesn't seem to have an 1860 census available online. Fulton County doesn't have an 1860 census. Douglas County no census. Paulding County has no Eady's in the census. Cobb County, none. Polk County, no Eady's. Haralson County, no Eady's. Heard County, no Hiram. Bartow County (this isn't a surrounding county but it's rumored that Sara Kinney Eady is buried there. Nothing in Bartow. Carroll County, no Eady's.
- 12/2/14 Checked the Wilkinson County 1860 census but there are no Eady's listed. Because Hiram moved to Alabama later in life, I checked the census records for Blount County (now Cullman) but didn't find anything.
- 12/2/14 Checking for alternate spellings of Eady (Edy, Eadie, Edie) and also doing a general search for 'Hiram' in all of the counties I checked earlier. Checked these counties: Carroll, Paulding, Polk, Haralson,
- 12/4/14 Did a search for the entire US census of 1860 for "Hiram Eady," with no satisfactory results. Weird!!! Possible he appears on a census for a county that is not yet available online. Unlikely he was from another country at that time. It seems like there would have been a story passed down that "grandpa was from England" or something.
