Eadys in Mississippi?

I received an email from a distant cousin who is also descended from Hiram H. Eady.

This cousin descends from Hiram's second son, Robert Hamilton Eady. My cousin claims that Robert was born in Mississippi in 1877.

I've had a hard time finding Hiram or his wife, Sarah Kinney, prior to the 1880 census. Could they have been in Mississippi?

I do have a marriage license for Hiram & Sarah that is dated 1873 and it is from Carroll, Georgia. Did they move to Mississippi after their wedding, and then move back to Georgia before 1880?

I've asked my cousin if he has any proof- some kind of backup that says for sure that Robert was born in Mississippi. If he does I will begin searching the census records there. I wonder if the Kinneys were from that state? Why would Hiram have moved to Mississippi?

Eady Marriages in Carroll County, Georgia

I had an idea- I typed in 'May 26, 1873 Carroll, Georgia' into Google's search engine. This is the date and location of Hiram H. Eady's marriage to Sarah Kinney.

I was surprised to find some newspaper articles from The Carroll County Times from that year! (http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/carroll/newspapers/187218731043gnw.txt)

Here are the extracts:

"Hymeneal: Married on the 24th inst.,(July 24, 1873) by J. M. Hamrick, N. P., at
the residence of Mrs. Eady, Mr. M. T. Hulsy to Miss Martha Eady, all of Carroll."

(My note: My family tree does show that Hiram had a sister named Martha)

"Hymeneal:  Married on the 2nd inst (Jan. 2, 1873) at the residence of M. R.
Aderhold by J. M. Hamrick, NP , Mr. T. J. Pearson and Mrs. Mary J. Bean.
On the same date at the residence of the brides father by the same, Mr. George
T. Williams and Miss Margaret A. Ayres.(Jan. 2, 1873)
Also, on the 29th (Jan. 29, 1873) at the residence of Mrs. M. E. ONeal by J. M.
Hamrick, NP, Mr. J. M. Eady and Miss V. J. Smith."

(My note: J. M. Eady is Joseph M. Could he be a brother to Hiram? Joseph's grave)

I find it interesting that Hiram and Sarah's marriage isn't mentioned in the newspaper. According to the marriage license:

"Carroll County, Georgia: To any minister of the Gospel Judge or Justice of the Peace: You are hereby authorized and permitted to join in matrimony, H. H. Eady and S. E. Kinney provided there be no lawful cause to obstruct the (?) according to the Constitution and Laws of this state and for so doing this shall be your sufficient license.

Given under my hand and seal this 24th day of May, 1873, D. B. Juhan, Ordinary (my note: I have found this name in other legal publications).

I hereby certify that H. H. Eady and S. E. Kinney were married on this 26th day of May 1873 by me. J. M. Mence (my note: again, not 100% sure about name)."

I was also curious as to what 'hymeneal' means- it's not a term we use anymore! According to the online dictionary it means, "of or concerning marriage."

I found a couple references to the Kinney family as well.

"APRIL 12, 1872...We have in pursuance of a recent act of the Legislature,
elected the following named persons and "County Board of Education" for Carroll
county:  Prof. A. C. Reese, Prof. F. H. M. Henderson, Judge W. B. Bracewell for
two years, and Prof. John M. Richardson and James P. Griffin for four years.
.....In taking leave of his honor Judge Wright, we desire to express our
high appreciation of the able manner in which he has discharged his official
duties during the present term, and to the Solicitor General Cox, we tender our
thanks....
...We recommend that these presentments be published in the Carroll County
Times.
Benjamin M. Long, Foreman, James a Jones, John D. Prewitt, Samuel M. Craven,
And. J. Adderhold, William W. Roop, Archibald F. White
Wm. P. Merrell, Jabez Miles.  Jno M. Thurmond, Ephram M. Noles, Jesse Kinney,
George W. Camp, James W. Crson, Thomas H. West, William Amis, Geo. A. McDaniel,
Robt. T. McCurdy, David J. Moore. Wm. O. Robinson"

When I was searching census records for Sarah Kinney I did find the family of Jesse Kinney and, for a time, wondered if he was her father.

Also,

"Married - On Thursday the 11th inst (Dec. 11, 1873) at the residence of Wm.
Brys, W. F. Grant to Miss M. D. Prince, by A. Sharp, J. P.,
On the same day (Dec. 11, 1873) at the residence of the Bride's father, J. W.
Stovall to Miss M. E. _________-.
By the Rev. Jas Bryce on Sunday 8th of July,1873,  at the residence of the
brides mother, Mr. James Crews to Miss Martha Buice.
Also by the same, on Thursday, (Dec. 4, 1873) at the residence of the brides
father, Mr. John B. McWhorter to Miss Mary E. McWhorter. (Note by
transcriber:  John Bunyon McWhorter, born Jul. 1851, died 1900 in Alabama.  Son
of Moses Allen McWhorter and Sarah Kinney. )"

The Sarah Kinney mentioned in this article could not be the same Sarah that married Hiram, as the transcriber of the article says that this Sarah was the mother of John B. McWhorter who was born in 1851. Our Sarah was born in 1856. Still- there might be a connection there!

My "Conclusion" for Hiram Hamilton Eady

I use "conclusion" between apostraphes because I cannot really conclude anything without hard evidence. For some reason while searching for Hiram's parents I always come up with Henry H. Eady and Nancy Caldwell. I cannot PROVE they are really his parents, or that the Hiram Hamilton that lived with them is my great-great grandfather. I may never be able to prove it.

However, lacking any other evidence, like a census record, for now I will go along with the assumption this information is correct. It may be that another researcher has found the evidence and I just don't have it yet.

This is an example of what I usually find when searching family trees for Hiram:

Going forward I will use this information to trace Hiram's ancestry. I HATE that I can't prove it, but I guess as long as I make it clear I don't have evidence then a future researcher can take this at face value.

The Search for Hiram in the 1860, 1870 & 1910 Censuses

I am unable to locate Hiram Hamilton Eady in the 1860, 1870, and 1910 censuses.

The 1860 census would have been the first that he would have appeared in.
In 1870 he would have been around 20 years old. I know from a marriage license that he married in 1873 and was living in Carroll County, Georgia at that time.
I located him in the 1880 census, living in Carroll.
The 1890 census does not exist because of a fire in the 20th century.
I located Hiram in the 1900 census, living in Cullman, Alabama.
I cannot find him in the 1910 census, which would have been the last one before his death in 1915.

I've been trying for some time now to locate Hiram Eady in the 1860 census. He would have been around 10 years old. I figure the 1860 census would solve exactly who his parents were!

This blog entry is so that I can keep track of all my research. It becomes really confusing.

I'm sort of working backward with the belief that the family trees listing Henry H. Eady and Nancy Caldwell being Hiram's parents are correct.

Here is a fact I discovered:

Henry & Nancy were married in 1850 in Fayette County, Georgia. This information was obtained from their marriage license.

I believe they were married in February and Hiram was born in November the same year. I don't believe births were recorded in a special way like they are today so I'm not expecting to find a certificate. The 1860 census should show Hiram listed in the household.

Clues

  1. According to a family tree listed here: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/i/l/Odell-Williams-GA/BOOK-0001/0003-0006.html Henry Eady married Elizabeth Gay in 1807 in Wilkerson County, Georgia. Henry & Elizabeth would be the parents of Henry H. Eady. 12/2/14 NOTE: there is no 'Wilkerson' county in Georgia, only Wilkinson.
  2. Downloaded a map of the counties in Georgia. I noticed that Fayette County is close to Carroll. I'm going to search surrounding counties to see if I can find the Eady's in the census.
  3. 12/2/14: Just occurred to me that Eady may be misspelled as 'Edy.' Will double check all of the census records for this spelling.

Research Notes

There are NO Eady's in Fayette County for the 1860 census. I feel the information available online was pretty complete.
  • 12/2/14 Checking surrounding counties for census records. Coweta County doesn't seem to have an 1860 census available online. Fulton County doesn't have an 1860 census. Douglas County no census. Paulding County has no Eady's in the census. Cobb County, none. Polk County, no Eady's. Haralson County, no Eady's. Heard County, no Hiram. Bartow County (this isn't a surrounding county but it's rumored that Sara Kinney Eady is buried there. Nothing in Bartow. Carroll County, no Eady's.
  • 12/2/14 Checked the Wilkinson County 1860 census but there are no Eady's listed. Because Hiram moved to Alabama later in life, I checked the census records for Blount County (now Cullman) but didn't find anything.
  • 12/2/14 Checking for alternate spellings of Eady (Edy, Eadie, Edie) and also doing a general search for 'Hiram' in all of the counties I checked earlier. Checked these counties: Carroll, Paulding, Polk, Haralson,
  • 12/4/14 Did a search for the entire US census of 1860 for "Hiram Eady," with no satisfactory results. Weird!!! Possible he appears on a census for a county that is not yet available online. Unlikely he was from another country at that time. It seems like there would have been a story passed down that "grandpa was from England" or something.

Two family stories related to Hiram Hamilton Eady

Hiram Hamilton Eady
born 1850 Carroll, Georgia died 1915 Cullman, Alabama

Two stories have passed down through my branch of Hiram's family. I'm assuming these stories were told to my grandfather, Richard L. Stricklin, by his mother, Annie E. Eady Stricklin.

The first story is about why Hiram and his children moved from Carroll County, Georgia, to Cullman, Alabama. Hiram's first wife, and the mother of his children, Sara Kinney Eady, passed away. Hiram remarried a woman named Mary Kelly. According to the story Mary Kelly was really mean to Hiram's children. One day while Mary was out visiting relatives Hiram packed up his belongings and his children in a wagon and left for Alabama.

I do know that Hiram and kids are living in Cullman by the 1900 census.

The second story is how Hiram, as a child, remembered seeing his house burning and mattresses being thrown out of the second floor windows into the trees- with feathers flying everywhere.

According to Richard Stricklin's eldest daughter, Joan, he would sometimes talk about a family plantation but my Aunt Jo didn't know if he was joking or not.

I researched the Stricklin family and could not find any records of a plantation although I did find a platte book for my Stricklin ancestors.

Hiram would have been about 12 years old at the start of the Civil War. I recently discovered through reading the history of Carroll County, Georgia, that General Sherman and his troops were staying at a train depot there while he planned his infamous March to the Sea. My guess is Hiram remembered seeing his house being burned to the ground. Now I do not know if the house was a plantation or a simple family home. To date I'm unable to verify who his parents were although many family trees list Henry H. Eady and Nancy Caldwell.

If Henry and Nancy are his parents then I may have more proof that there was a plantation involved.

I cannot find Hiram in the 1860 and 1870 censuses in Carroll County, Georgia.

The earliest record I have for him is a marriage license in Carroll County to S. E. Kinney in 1873.

My relation to Hiram is...

(Me) James Allan Noel, son of
Linda Kay Stricklin, daughter of
Richard Lester Stricklin, son of
Annie Elizabeth Eady, daughter of
Hiram Hamilton Eady

Hiram is my great, great grandfather.

My families I am researching

Here is a list of surnames and their known locations in history with the hope that fellow genealogists will discover this blog and recognize their own ancestors.

Noel: Vicksburg, Michigan
Cleaver, Hanna, Hamilton, Rugg

Stricklin: Cullman, Alabama; Missouri; Oklahoma; Kalamazoo, Michigan; Schoolcraft, Michigan
Eady, Kenney or Kinney: Carroll, Georgia; Cullman, Alabama
Bare: Virginia; Tennessee; Indiana; Jefferson, Illinois; Piggott, Arkansas; Malden, Missouri, Kalamazoo, Michigan
Hunsaker: Illinois

I will upload my research on the Bare family for which I believe I am the first descendant of my particular branch to compile. I'll try and upload in the coming week.

I'm currently working on my Eady/Kinney ancestors and am having a hard time. It's difficult separating fact from family legend! I do KNOW that my Eady ancestor, Hiram Hamilton Eady, was living in Carroll County, Georgia, during the 1880 census. Family legend says he was born there, too, with some family trees claiming he was born in the town of Villa Rica.

Another family legend has it that his wife, Sara "Isbell" Kinney (or sometimes Kenney) was 1/2 Cherokee from the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina. I'm beginning to think this is pure legend as I'm finding that many families have this exact narrative.

I've scoured the 1860 and 1870 census records in Carroll County and cannot find Hiram or Sara. Well, I found several Sara Kinney's, but after further research they do not seem to be my great-great Grandmother.

The earliest piece of historical fact I have found is Hiram & Sara's marriage license from 1873.

Introduction

The purpose of this blog is to publish my genealogical findings.
