Please contact me!

I feel so sad that I'm seeing inquiries about my family on other website and I'm not able to respond directly on those sites! I was on Ancestry for awhile did not like paying the monthly fee when I found I could get most of the information for free.

If you would like to contact me, my email address is JamesAFN@aol.com. I've had this email account for over 10 years and have no plans to ever retire it. Just be sure to put something eye-catching in the Subject line since your email will go into my spam folder. I always scan everything in there so I don't inadvertently delete someone's email.

I've already 'met' a distant cousin through my blog here and it's wonderful seeing new photos and hearing more stories. Once I have permission I'll repost things here.

Here is an inquiry to my post on John and Dicey Bare from Ancestry. I'm hoping the lady who posted this will somehow be able to find this post and my answer!

"I am interested in more information about John Bare. This is the name of my grandmother's father. He was never married to my great grandmother and my grandmother never knew him but she once had me searching a cemetery looking for his name. My grandmother was born in 1929.- myerst1029"

Hi Myerst1029. I'm pretty sure we're talking about a different John Bare. My great, great grandpa John Bare died around 1899 in Piggott, Arkansas. His wife Dicey went on to remarry a man named Jim Barnwell but they later divorced. Dicey lived with my great-grandpa and grandma Dave Bare in Missouri until her death in 1928.

By the way- is everyone else annoyed that sites like Ancestry take information you've posted on the internet, put it on their site, and then charge people to see it? Not right.

Eady Grist Mill in Wilkinson County, Georgia

JOHN EADY SR., who emigrated from Ireland, whose Revolutionary service was certified by General Elijah Clarke, was one of the early settlers of the county, building a mill on Black Creek still known as "Eady's Mill." His son, Henry, (b. 1786-1847) was married in 1807 to Elizabeth Gay (b. 1790, daughter of Allen and Abigail (Castleberry) Gay. Henry became very wealthy, owning a great many slaves. Henry's daughter, Temperance, married Oren Davis.

Fish Fry at Eady's Mill
Milledgeville, Ga, August 21 (Special) A party of Milledgeville men left here in ten automobiles for Eady's mill, Wilkinson county, early this morning. The attraction is a big fish fry. In order that some repairs be made at the mill, the pond will be drained. This pond is a large body of water, and abounds with fish, especially noted for fine trout that the Milledgeville sportsman is so fond of.

Hanna: The Many Wives of Melvin

I wanted to create a separate post for my great, great Grandfather Melvin Franklin Hanna. While doing research I discovered he married at least four times in his life and I wanted to keep track of the dates and names of all his wives.

I will relate a story that was told to me by my grandmother Joyce Noel nee Cleaver. It is about her mother, Marie Lillian Hanna. I'm going by memory:

Melvin and Elsie (Hamilton) Hanna were very poor. At some point in their childrens' lives, the children had to be split up and sent into foster homes because Melvin could not support them any more.

This was very traumatic for the children.

My great grandmother Marie was sent to a foster home in southern Michigan (Coldwater?) where she was physically abused. The abuse was so bad that one day, when Marie was at school, the teacher noted blood on Marie's legs. It was soaking through her dress. The teacher reported the abuse to the authorities and she was removed from the abusive home.

At a later time one of Marie's elder brothers, who had been sent to a farm as a foster child, began to search for his siblings. He found Marie and took her in. Marie was reunited with her sisters Nila & Alice, too.

I'm guessing right now that Elsie Hamilton passed away and Melvin remarried and got rid of the children he had with Elsie. (1-9-15 update: Elsie didn't pass away, she and Melvin divorced. I don't know why, yet. It appears that Elsie remarried two more times in her life, first to a Julian Lambert, and then to John Breseman.)

On to Melvin's marriages:

Wife #1: Nancy J. Mendall
Wife #2: Elsie Hamilton <--- my great, great grandmother
Wife #3: Elizzie Ellard
Wife #4: Mary Elizabeth Thomas

1880: Living with his parents Anson & Eliza in Wexford, Michigan. He is 4 years old. 1880 census record

1897: Married Nancy J. Mendall on December 24th. Melvin is 21 years old and living in Wexford, Michigan.

1898: Son Elmer is born on October 4th in Springville, Wexford County, Michigan.

1900: Living with wife Nancy and son Elmer who is 2 years old in Wexford, Michigan. 1900 census record

1908: Married Elsie Hamilton (my great, great grandmother) on April 16th. Melvin is 31 and they are living in Wexford, Michigan.

1917-1918: Melvin is drafted during WW1. He is living in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

1920: Married Elizzie Ellard on January 10th. Melvin is 43 years old.

1928: Married Mary Elizabeth Thomas on July 3rd. Melvin is 52 years old and they are living in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

1930: Living with wife Mary and brother William in Baltimore, Barry County, Michigan. Melvin is 53 years old. 1930 census record

1936: Melvin passes away on December 9th. His widow, Mary, is still alive in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Melvin was 60 years old and he is listed as a farmer. Death record

Roots: My Noel Genealogy

Despite my last name, I haven't done a lot of research on my Noel genealogy. The reason for this is because my great Uncle Bob Noel did the research years ago. The problem is he has passed away and nobody in my immediate family seems to have a copy of his research. His sister may have the research. While she is my late grandfather's sister I do not know her very well at all.

For now I am posting what I know and what I am able to find.

Eadys in Mississippi?

I received an email from a distant cousin who is also descended from Hiram H. Eady.

This cousin descends from Hiram's second son, Robert Hamilton Eady. My cousin claims that Robert was born in Mississippi in 1877.

I've had a hard time finding Hiram or his wife, Sarah Kinney, prior to the 1880 census. Could they have been in Mississippi?

I do have a marriage license for Hiram & Sarah that is dated 1873 and it is from Carroll, Georgia. Did they move to Mississippi after their wedding, and then move back to Georgia before 1880?

I've asked my cousin if he has any proof- some kind of backup that says for sure that Robert was born in Mississippi. If he does I will begin searching the census records there. I wonder if the Kinneys were from that state? Why would Hiram have moved to Mississippi?

My contact information

Want to send me an email? I'm always hoping a distant cousin will contact me with information that I am missing!

JamesAFN at aol dot com. I check this email most often. Be sure to put something that will catch my eye in the subject line. Your email will initially go into my spam folder and I always check that.

Why I named this blog "The Last Noel"

Just in case anyone wonders...

The title of the blog was thought up really quickly! It's a play on the Christmas carol, "The First Noel," and the fact that in my particular branch of the Noel family I am the only male grandson of Jack and Joyce.

Since I never married, the Noel line stops with me.

Eady Marriages in Carroll County, Georgia

I had an idea- I typed in 'May 26, 1873 Carroll, Georgia' into Google's search engine. This is the date and location of Hiram H. Eady's marriage to Sarah Kinney.

I was surprised to find some newspaper articles from The Carroll County Times from that year! (http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/carroll/newspapers/187218731043gnw.txt)

Here are the extracts:

"Hymeneal: Married on the 24th inst.,(July 24, 1873) by J. M. Hamrick, N. P., at
the residence of Mrs. Eady, Mr. M. T. Hulsy to Miss Martha Eady, all of Carroll."

(My note: My family tree does show that Hiram had a sister named Martha)

"Hymeneal:  Married on the 2nd inst (Jan. 2, 1873) at the residence of M. R.
Aderhold by J. M. Hamrick, NP , Mr. T. J. Pearson and Mrs. Mary J. Bean.
On the same date at the residence of the brides father by the same, Mr. George
T. Williams and Miss Margaret A. Ayres.(Jan. 2, 1873)
Also, on the 29th (Jan. 29, 1873) at the residence of Mrs. M. E. ONeal by J. M.
Hamrick, NP, Mr. J. M. Eady and Miss V. J. Smith."

(My note: J. M. Eady is Joseph M. Could he be a brother to Hiram? Joseph's grave)

I find it interesting that Hiram and Sarah's marriage isn't mentioned in the newspaper. According to the marriage license:

"Carroll County, Georgia: To any minister of the Gospel Judge or Justice of the Peace: You are hereby authorized and permitted to join in matrimony, H. H. Eady and S. E. Kinney provided there be no lawful cause to obstruct the (?) according to the Constitution and Laws of this state and for so doing this shall be your sufficient license.

Given under my hand and seal this 24th day of May, 1873, D. B. Juhan, Ordinary (my note: I have found this name in other legal publications).

I hereby certify that H. H. Eady and S. E. Kinney were married on this 26th day of May 1873 by me. J. M. Mence (my note: again, not 100% sure about name)."

I was also curious as to what 'hymeneal' means- it's not a term we use anymore! According to the online dictionary it means, "of or concerning marriage."

I found a couple references to the Kinney family as well.

"APRIL 12, 1872...We have in pursuance of a recent act of the Legislature,
elected the following named persons and "County Board of Education" for Carroll
county:  Prof. A. C. Reese, Prof. F. H. M. Henderson, Judge W. B. Bracewell for
two years, and Prof. John M. Richardson and James P. Griffin for four years.
.....In taking leave of his honor Judge Wright, we desire to express our
high appreciation of the able manner in which he has discharged his official
duties during the present term, and to the Solicitor General Cox, we tender our
thanks....
...We recommend that these presentments be published in the Carroll County

When I was searching census records for Sarah Kinney I did find the family of Jesse Kinney and, for a time, wondered if he was her father.

Also,

Stovall to Miss M. E. _________-.
By the Rev. Jas Bryce on Sunday 8th of July,1873,  at the residence of the
brides mother, Mr. James Crews to Miss Martha Buice.
Also by the same, on Thursday, (Dec. 4, 1873) at the residence of the brides
father, Mr. John B. McWhorter to Miss Mary E. McWhorter. (Note by
transcriber:  John Bunyon McWhorter, born Jul. 1851, died 1900 in Alabama.  Son
of Moses Allen McWhorter and Sarah Kinney. )"

The Sarah Kinney mentioned in this article could not be the same Sarah that married Hiram, as the transcriber of the article says that this Sarah was the mother of John B. McWhorter who was born in 1851. Our Sarah was born in 1856. Still- there might be a connection there!
